San Jorge School Has a New Playground

SAN JORGE 4/21/08–Monday was a magical day!! Amber and Ryan Mouton from Texas brought their two little boys, Anderson and Mario to dedicate the playground that they had worked so hard to build for the children of San Jorge.

When we arrived the children were so excited, they were calling out from their classrooms, banging on the windows and could not wait to get to the playground.

There has never been a playground in San Jorge, there is a small playground in the Health Center in Panajachel, but the gates are often locked and the equipment is small and old. So to see such a large slide, a shiny monkey bars and best of all, the twirling carousel, was just unbelievable to the children!

There are approx. 552 children in the school at San Jorge – at one stage it seemed like all of them were trying to get on the playground at the same time!

Many of the mothers attended the Dedication Ceremony. They had given their time and carried the cement blocks up the steep hills to the school. These cement blocks were being used as a foundation for the
fencing to go around the playground. The mothers were so happy that their children would have somewhere to play.

The Mayor of San Jorge, the Directors of the Women’s group, the teachers, parents and children expressed their gratitude by presenting a beautiful weaving to Amber and Ryan but it was the smiles and the laughter of the children that said it all!

The day did not seem like it could get any better for the children but then Amber and Ryan, as an extra celebration supplied cookies and a drink to each child in the school!

Thank you to Amber, Ryan, The Gateway Fellowship and all the individuals who donted to make this dream a reality.

  5. Wow! What an incredible accomplishment! Can you tell me how you initiated a project of this magnitude? I would love to head up a project to help the school in Tierra Linda–just something like getting new furniture, supplies etc. This playground is fantastic. You are awesome.
